Butter follows an ambitious woman who is married to Iowa’s reigning butter sculpting champ but decides to enter the race on her own when he retires. She’s the shoo-in until an adopted young black girl discovers she has an uncanny talent for butter-carving and becomes a late-breaking favourite.
Butter takes us into the bizarre world of competition butter sculpting and the people that take it far too seriously. What presents like a quirky, off-beat Comedy of a similar tone to the brilliant ‘Best in Show’ a mockumentary about a dog show competition, actually falls far short of achieving anything close to that. Butter spreads itself pretty thin with a severe lack of jokes that mainly fall flat – just like that joke. Most of the films laughs can be had with the blooper reel on the end credits. The great cast do what they can with the material but it’s certainly not worth sitting through just for them and if your hoping to gain insight into this strange pastime of butter sculpting there isn’t much here for you either. The film mainly focuses on the childish rivalry between the main contestants that plays out to its highly predictable conclusion.
